What to do when someone dies in the Philippines · Ano ang gagawin

  1. 1

Register the death within 30 days

Iparehistro ang kamatayan sa loob ng 30 araw

Register at the Local Civil Registrar where the death occurred. The doctor (or Municipal Health Officer) issues the Medical Certificate of Death; the LCR issues the official record. Order at least 5 PSA-authenticated copies — SSS, GSIS, banks, Pag-IBIG, insurance and estate settlement each need one.

  2. 2

Hold the lamay (wake) and funeral Mass

    Lamay at Misa ng Libing

Most families hold a 3–7 night lamay with rosary or novena, followed by a funeral Mass and burial or cremation. The funeral parlour will guide you on remains transport, embalming and required permits.

  3. 3

Claim benefits from SSS, GSIS, PhilHealth, Pag-IBIG

    Mag-apply ng benepisyo

SSS Funeral Benefit is ₱20,000–₱60,000 depending on contributions. GSIS pays funeral benefits for government employees. PhilHealth covers eligible hospital costs. Pag-IBIG pays out savings and provident benefits to beneficiaries.

  4. 4

Observe the pasiyam and 40th-day Mass

Pasiyam at ika-40 araw na Misa

Filipino tradition marks the soul's journey with a 9-day novena (pasiyam) immediately after burial and a Mass on the 40th day. A TributeLegacy page lets family abroad join in remembrance from anywhere in the world.

Common questions · Mga karaniwang tanong

How do I register a death in the Philippines? · Paano magparehistro ng kamatayan?
A death must be registered at the Local Civil Registrar (LCR) of the city or municipality where the death occurred, within 30 days. The attending physician or, in their absence, the Municipal Health Officer issues the Medical Certificate of Death. The PSA later issues the official Death Certificate (Form 103) — order at least 5 PSA-authenticated copies for SSS/GSIS, banks, Pag-IBIG, insurance and estate settlement.
What are the traditional steps for a Filipino wake (lamay)?
Most Catholic Filipino families hold a lamay (wake) for 3–7 nights with the casket at home, a funeral parlour or the parish. Family and neighbours visit, share food, and pray the rosary or novena. The funeral Mass is followed by burial or cremation. The pasiyam (9-day novena) and 40th-day Mass mark the journey of the soul.
How can OFWs and family abroad take part in the wake?
A free TributeLegacy page lets family from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Hong Kong, the US, Canada and beyond light candles, leave tributes and join the novena from anywhere. Many families also share a livestream link of the Mass on the memorial page so loved ones overseas can be present, even from a distance.
What support is there for funeral and burial expenses?
SSS members may claim a Funeral Benefit (₱20,000–₱60,000 depending on contributions). GSIS pays funeral benefits to government employees' families. PhilHealth covers certain hospital costs. Indigent families can apply for burial assistance from the DSWD, the LGU social welfare office or the Office of the President (Malasakit).
Is a TributeLegacy page free for Filipino families?
Yes — opo, libre. Creating a memorial page is free. You can write in English or Tagalog, add the parish, the photos, the songs, and invite family across the Philippines and the diaspora to remember together. There is no time limit and no paid tier.
