Keep their light burning.

A memorial for family across India and the world.

Create a free tribute page — photos, voice notes, music and a digital diya. A gentle home where family in India, the Gulf, the UK, the US, Canada and Australia can remember together.

What to do when someone dies in India

  1. 1

Get the medical certificate of cause of death

Issued by the attending doctor or hospital. If death is at home, contact a registered medical practitioner; for unexplained deaths, the police and a government medical officer must be informed.

  2. 2

Register the death within 21 days

At the local Municipal Corporation, Nagar Palika or Gram Panchayat — usually via the cremation ground / funeral coordinator. Request several certified copies.

  3. 3

    Hold the antyeshti and shradh

Cremation traditionally takes place the same day. The 13-day mourning period (terahvin) and shradh ceremonies follow. A digital memorial helps distant family join in spirit.

  4. 4

    Notify bank, insurance, employer, EPFO

Claim life insurance (LIC etc.), EPF/pension via EPFO, and any group insurance. Update Aadhaar/PAN status, freeze sole bank accounts and apply for transfer/transmission.

  5. 5

Apply for legal heir / succession certificate

Required to transfer property, shares and bank balances. Obtained from the local tehsildar/court. Consult a lawyer for wills, intestate succession (Hindu/Muslim/Christian Succession Acts) and immovable property.

Common questions

How do I register a death in India?
Death must be registered within 21 days at the local municipal body (Nagar Nigam / Panchayat) or via the Civil Registration System. The doctor or hospital issues the medical cause-of-death certificate. The Registrar issues the official death certificate — request multiple copies for bank, insurance, property and succession matters.
What rituals does the Hindu shradh tradition involve?
Shradh is performed on the 13th day after death and annually on the death anniversary (tithi) — offering pind-daan and feeding Brahmins or the needy in remembrance. Many families also observe Pitru Paksha, a 16-day period each year, to honour all ancestors. A digital memorial allows relatives across India, the Gulf, the UK, the US and Australia to join in remembrance.
Can family in the diaspora light a diya online?
Yes. Children and grandchildren in Dubai, London, Toronto, Sydney or the US can light a digital diya, share a memory, and join the family on shradh, Diwali and the death anniversary — without flying home.
Where can I find grief and bereavement support in India?
iCall (9152987821, Mon-Sat 8am-10pm) and Vandrevala Foundation (1860-2662-345, 24/7) offer free counselling. Sanjivini Society for Mental Health (011-4076-9002) provides bereavement support. Many hospitals and hospices (Pallium India, CanSupport) run grief groups.
Is the memorial page really free for Indian families?
Yes — completely free, no ads, no card required. Add photos, music, voice notes and digital diyas. Share via WhatsApp with relatives across India and the diaspora.
