What to do when someone dies in Ghana

  1. 1

    Get the medical cause-of-death certificate

From the hospital or attending doctor. For deaths at home or in unclear circumstances, contact the police — a post-mortem may be ordered.

  2. 2

Inform family elders and the abusua/clan head

In Ghanaian tradition the family head and clan elders coordinate funeral planning, dress codes and announcements.

  3. 3

Register the death within 21 days

At the Births and Deaths Registry. Bring the medical certificate, informant's ID and Ghana Card. Request multiple certified copies.

  4. 4

    Plan wake-keeping, burial and thanksgiving

Most funerals run Friday wake-keeping, Saturday burial, Sunday thanksgiving. Coordinate funeral directors, mortuary, transport and printing of brochures.

  5. 5

Settle SSNIT, bank and estate matters

Claim survivor's benefits from SSNIT, notify banks and insurers, and apply for Letters of Administration or probate at the High Court for property and land matters.

Common questions

How do I register a death in Ghana?
Deaths must be registered with the Births and Deaths Registry within 21 days (free) — after that a fee applies up to 12 months, after which a court order is required. The hospital or attending doctor issues the medical cause-of-death certificate, which the Registry uses to issue the official death certificate.
What does a Ghanaian funeral involve?
Funerals in Ghana — among Akan, Ga, Ewe, Dagomba and other peoples — are major community events. The family announces the death, holds a wake-keeping (often on a Friday), the burial and thanksgiving service on Saturday and Sunday, and may observe one-week, 40-day and one-year remembrances. Custom dictates dress (red & black for close family, white for thanksgiving) and the printing of obituary posters and brochures.
Can family abroad take part in the funeral?
Yes. The memorial page can be shared on WhatsApp with relatives in the UK, the US, Canada, Germany or Italy. They can light a digital candle, watch the service stream, share photos and contribute to the family tribute.
Where can I find bereavement support in Ghana?
Mental Health Authority's Suicide Prevention helpline (+233-509-455-369), Ghana Psychological Association directories and many church/mosque-based grief groups can help. Pallium Ghana and the Korle-Bu Hospice support bereaved families.
Is the memorial page free?
Yes — completely free, no ads, no card required. Create a page in English (or Twi/Ga in your own words), share it on WhatsApp and let the whole family take part.
