David Morgan (1833-1919). Opened the shop at 5pm Friday Oct 31, 1879. David Morgan wrote these words in his cash book to mark the opening of his small draper’s shop on the corner of The Hayes and Barry Lane in October 1879. The Business grew into the well-known department store, David Morgan Limited. The son of a Breconshire tenant farmer, David Morgan had previously been a successful draper in Pontlottyn. The existing façade of the store to The Hayes was completed in David Morgan’s lifetime; he also built the Morgan Arcade, linking The Hayes with St Mary Street. The business continued to be managed by David Morgan’s descendants until it closed at 5 pm on Saturday 29 January 2005.
