Packhorse Court. This yard was originally a fine example of a burgage plot dating from medieval days. Behind the buildings fronting on to the market square would be an enclosure for horses, workshops and facilities associated with the packhorse trade - stabling, shoeing, feeding and ale for the drivers at the inn. The old name of Shambles Yard is a reminder of its traditional links with Keswick's butchers. More recently the yard was used by a mixture of small shops and workshops until the new development in 1990.
