Chapter House - The canons met daily in the chapter house. They listened to reading from the rule of St. Augustine, confessed their sins and were disciplined by the Abbot. They also discussed the business of the Abbey. The Abbey of St. Mary was founded for Augustinian canons in around 1124 and closed by Henry VIII in 1538. Although by 1600 most of the building had been dismantled some parts survive today both above and below ground. The name 'Abbey Fields' reminds us of the Abbey that once stood here.
