Within the historic Edinburgh Castle, the Scottish National War Memorial stands as a place of enduring remembrance. Designed by chief architect Robert Lorimer, its construction began in 1919, with a formal opening in 1927. The memorial is situated in a repurposed barrack block at Crown Square, a central part of the castle.

It honours Scottish service personnel and civilians, as well as those associated with Scottish regiments, who lost their lives during the two world wars and in later conflicts. The extensive Rolls of Honour within the memorial list the names of Scots who died in service after 1914, encompassing various branches of the armed forces, merchant navy, and nursing services. These inscribed records also hold names from more recent conflicts, including the Korean War, the Falklands War, the Gulf War, and operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, ensuring a comprehensive testament to sacrifice.
