What to do when someone dies in wartime Ukraine

This is a brief, practical list. It is not legal advice. Procedures change — confirm with the relevant authority or a notary before acting. Це короткий практичний перелік, не юридична консультація.

   Confirm the notification through official channels

   Підтвердьте повідомлення через офіційні канали

   If a loved one served, contact their military unit or the regional Territorial Recruitment Centre (ТЦК). For civilians, contact the local police or the State Emergency Service (ДСНС).

   Якщо близька людина служила — зв'яжіться з військовою частиною або обласним ТЦК. Для цивільних — поліція або ДСНС.

   Register the death

   Зареєструйте смерть

   Register at the nearest ДРАЦС (civil registry). Outside Ukraine, this can be done at the nearest Ukrainian consulate or embassy. Temporarily-occupied territories: registration is possible through any DRACS in Ukraine using available evidence.

   Зареєструйте у найближчому ДРАЦСі. За кордоном — у консульстві України. З тимчасово окупованих територій — у будь-якому ДРАЦСі за наявними доказами.

   DNA identification if needed

   ДНК-ідентифікація, якщо потрібно

   If identification is uncertain, close blood relatives can give a DNA sample at any National Police forensic unit. Keep a written record of the case number.

   Якщо ідентифікація неможлива — близькі родичі здають зразок ДНК у відділі поліції. Збережіть номер справи письмово.

   Apply for state support for families

   Подайте заяву на державну допомогу для родин

   Families of fallen defenders are entitled to one-time and ongoing support. The Ministry of Veterans Affairs and Diia portal list current entitlements.

   Родини полеглих захисників мають право на одноразову й періодичну допомогу. Перелік на порталі Дія та Мінветеранів.

   Arrange burial or repatriation

   Організуйте поховання або репатріацію

   Military burials are coordinated with the unit. Civilian burials follow local registry rules. Repatriation across borders requires a death certificate and a no-objection from the receiving consulate.

   Військові поховання координує частина. Цивільні — за місцевими правилами. Для репатріації потрібне свідоцтво про смерть і дозвіл консульства приймаючої країни.
