Legacy Story

Born into a complex family situation and orphaned early, Toyohiko Kagawa's conversion to Christianity as a teenager set him on a lifelong path of radical compassion. He famously chose to live among the destitute in the Shinkawa slums of Kobe, sharing their hardships and applying his faith directly to the overwhelming problems of poverty and sickness he witnessed daily. Believing in practical solutions, Kagawa founded numerous organizations that became pillars of modern Japanese social welfare. He established credit unions (cooperatives) to free the poor from loan sharks, built schools for children, opened free clinics, and helped organize labor unions to advocate for workers' rights. His work was holistic, addressing not just immediate needs but also the systemic causes of inequality. Beyond his direct aid in the slums, Kagawa was a prolific writer, authoring over 150 books, and a passionate international advocate for peace. Nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize multiple times, he traveled the world speaking against war and promoting his vision of a cooperative global society founded on love and mutual aid. His concept of 'brotherhood economics' was a powerful alternative to both unchecked capitalism and state communism. Toyohiko Kagawa’s life remains a powerful testament to the impact one individual can have by combining deep faith with relentless action. The institutions he built continued to serve people long after his death, and his example has inspired countless social activists and reformers in Japan and around the world.

A phrase they used

I read in a book that a man called Christ went about doing good. It is very disconcerting to me that I am so easily satisfied with just going about.
