Legacy Story

Thomas Coram was a man of humble beginnings who became one of Britain's most significant social reformers. Born in Lyme Regis, he went to sea as a boy and became a successful shipwright and captain, spending time in the American colonies before settling in London in 1720. It was there that his life's great work would begin. Horrified by the sight of dying and abandoned infants on the city's streets, Coram was moved to act. He envisioned a single institution, a hospital, that could provide a safe haven for these 'foundlings'. For 17 years, he campaigned relentlessly to make this a reality, facing ridicule and indifference from the establishment. He cleverly enlisted the support of prominent women of the aristocracy, whose compassion and influence were key to his ultimate success. In 1739, King George II granted a Royal Charter for the establishment of the Foundling Hospital. It was the UK's first incorporated charity, a groundbreaking institution dedicated to child welfare. Coram's vision attracted the support of the leading artists and musicians of the day, including the painter William Hogarth and the composer George Frideric Handel, who held benefit concerts that helped fund the hospital and made it a fashionable cause. Though he was later pushed out of the hospital's day-to-day management and died in relative poverty, Coram's impact is immeasurable. He not only saved countless lives but also fundamentally changed public attitudes towards social responsibility and the care of vulnerable children. The charity he founded continues his work today under the name Coram, a testament to one man's compassionate and unyielding determination.
