Anne Lister, born in 1791, is remembered for her detailed diaries which offered remarkable insights into her life and times. From a family of landowners in West Yorkshire, Lister travelled extensively and pursued significant relationships, including one with Ann Walker. Their union at Holy Trinity Church in York is now recognised as a significant moment in the history of same-sex marriage in Britain. Lister's journals, which often used a coded script, have provided valuable information about contemporary society, her estates including Shibden Hall, and her diverse intellectual pursuits which spanned medicine, mathematics and engineering. The frankness of these writings, particularly concerning her romantic connections, led to questions about their authenticity until they were eventually verified.
