Petone, known in Māori as Pito-one, is an extensive area within Lower Hutt, located in Wellington, New Zealand. This historic suburb sits at the southern entrance to the Hutt Valley, bordering the northern edge of Wellington Harbour. Petone holds the distinction of being the earliest European settlement within the Wellington Region, established by arrivals in January 1840.

The place developed significantly over the following years, formally becoming a borough in 1888. Its distinct identity then evolved further when it joined with Lower Hutt, a conurbation now known as Hutt City, in 1989.
