Hugo Wolf was an Austrian composer celebrated for his art songs, known as Lieder. He infused this musical form with a unique and powerful expressive intensity, standing apart in late Romantic music.

Wolf's creative life was marked by periods of remarkable output, but also by struggles with depression that frequently halted his work. His final piece was composed in 1898, preceding a mental breakdown.
