講談高座発祥の地

江戸時代中期までの講談は　町の辻々に立っての辻講釈や　粗末な小屋で聴衆と同じ高さで演じられていた文化四年 (一八〇七年) 湯島天満宮の境内に住み　そこを席場としていた講談師伊東燕晋が　家康公の偉業を読むにあたり庶民と同じ高さでは恐れ多いことを理由に高さ三尺　一間四面の高座常設を北町奉行小田切土佐守に願い出て許された　これが高座の始まりであり　当宮の境内こそ我が国伝統話芸　講談高座発祥の地である
