HMAS Sydney I – SMS Emden Memorial

SMS Emden stands as a significant vessel from the German Imperial Navy's Dresden class. Constructed in Danzig and launched in 1908, this light cruiser, alongside its sister ship Dresden, was a formidable presence in its era. Emden was outfitted with ten 10.5 cm guns and two torpedo tubes, reflecting the naval technology of the early 20th century. Its operational life was largely defined by its deployment with the East Asia Squadron, stationed in Qingdao. Under the command of Karl von Müller from 1913, Emden's wartime service saw it transformed into a commerce raider, notably converting a captured Russian steamer into the Cormoran. The cruiser's daring independent raids in the Indian Ocean during the early stages of the conflict resulted in the capture of numerous vessels, marking its place in naval history.
