Within the historic confines of Edinburgh Castle, the Scottish National War Memorial stands as a solemn tribute to those from Scotland who lost their lives in global conflicts. Designed by chief architect Robert Lorimer, its construction began in 1919 and it was formally dedicated in 1927. The memorial resides within a repurposed barrack block at the castle's centre, accommodating a collection of significant monuments.

At its heart are the Rolls of Honour, inscribed with the names of Scottish service personnel and civilians killed in the First World War, the Second World War, and numerous later conflicts. These records encompass individuals born in Scotland or with a Scottish-born parent, serving in various capacities including the British Armed Forces, Merchant Navy, Dominion forces, women's services, nursing services, and Scottish regiments. The memorial also commemorates losses from further afield, such as the Korean War, Operation Banner, the Falklands War, the Gulf War, and more recent campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan.
