This edifice successively the property of the Cross Church, the Hans Lord Yester Earls of Tweeddale, the Douglases Earls of March and the Fourth Duke of Queensberry, was finally acquired by William Chambers and for purposes of social improvement presented by him as a free gift yo his native town 1857
