Francisco de Orellana

Francisco de Orellana was a Spanish explorer whose expeditions were crucial to the Spanish understanding and conquest of South America. He is remembered for commanding a remarkable voyage down the entire length of the Amazon River, reaching its mouth by August 1542. Following this journey, he sailed along the Atlantic coast to Cubagua Island, off the coast of Venezuela. Orellana also established the city of Guayaquil, located in modern-day Ecuador. His life concluded during a second expedition undertaken on the Amazon.
