Memorial

On 22 October 2014, Parliament Hill in Ottawa became the scene of significant events. Corporal Nathan Cirillo, a soldier who had served in Afghanistan and was a reservist, was on ceremonial duty at the National War Memorial when he was fatally shot. An attack then extended to the Centre Block parliament building, where politicians were gathered.

The incident concluded at the Centre Block with a police shootout. The perpetrator, Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, died at the scene. Following these events, the central area of Ottawa experienced a lockdown, with many schools also closing as a precaution. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police classified the event as a terrorist act. This occurrence marked a major security incident at Parliament Hill, drawing international notice and prompting discussions on the preparedness for terrorist threats and the security protocols at legislative centres.
