The later decades saw the company facing significant challenges through the 1970s. This period of difficulty eventually led to the acquisition of Bonds by the John Lewis Partnership in 1982. The store continued to operate under the Bonds name until 2001, when it was rebranded as John Lewis, marking a new chapter for the familiar Norwich retail site.
