Sir Joseph Swan FRS

Sir Joseph Wilson Swan, a distinguished English physicist, chemist, and inventor, is remembered for his pioneering work on incandescent lighting. He independently developed a functional incandescent light bulb and was instrumental in its first widespread use for illuminating homes and public spaces, notably the Savoy Theatre in London in 1881. His innovations were showcased at the International Exposition of Electricity in Paris in 1881, where his lighting illuminated the city. For his significant contributions, Swan received numerous accolades throughout his career, including a knighthood from King Edward VII in 1904 and the high French honour, the Legion of Honour, among other recognitions.
