Silvius Leopold Weiss was a composer and lutenist of considerable renown, born in Silesia in 1687. Early in his life, he demonstrated exceptional talent, performing for the Holy Roman Emperor. His skills saw him employed by European nobility, accompanying them on travels. For many years, Weiss served as a musician at the sophisticated Dresden court, renowned for his performances on the lute and theorbo. He developed a significant musical connection with Johann Sebastian Bach, with whom he is recorded to have played music on occasion. Weiss's legacy includes the most extensive collection of music ever written for the lute, securing his place as one of history's foremost lutenists. He died in 1750.
