Jean Bouin

Alexandre Bouin was a distinguished French athlete, celebrated for his achievements in middle-distance running. He represented France at the Olympic Games in both 1908 and 1912. His participation in the 1912 5000m race, where he secured a silver medal, is particularly remembered as a historic moment in the sport. In a closely contested event, Bouin ran against Hannes Kolehmainen, with both athletes pushing beyond previous world records in a dramatic finish that saw Kolehmainen claim victory by mere tenths of a second.

Bouin's athletic prowess extended beyond this memorable race, as he also set world records in the 3,000m and 10,000m in 1911, and the one-hour run in 1913. Tragically, his life was cut short during the First World War. In honour of his legacy, a stadium in Paris was named after him, and he was commemorated on a French postage stamp, with numerous sporting events held in tribute to his remarkable career.
