Photograph at the Antero de Quental Memorial

Antero de Quental was a significant figure in Portuguese literature and philosophy. Celebrated as one of the most remarkable poets of his time, his work holds a place among the most impactful Portuguese language artists throughout history. His standing is frequently discussed in the same breath as other literary giants like Camões, Bocage, and Pessoa.

Quental experienced periods of profound pessimism and depression during his life. By the time he was in Lisbon for his final visit, he was suffering from a persistent depression, further complicated by a spinal ailment. On September 11, 1891, he died by suicide, choosing to end his life on a garden bench.
