Jerusalem holds profound significance as a city situated on a plateau within the Judaean Mountains. It is recognised as a holy place for Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, making it one of the world's most ancient urban centres. The city's history is marked by repeated destruction, capture, and attacks, reflecting its long and often tumultuous past. Evidence of settlement dates back to the 4th millennium BCE, with early records referring to it as Urusalim. By the 9th century BCE, it had become a vital religious and administrative hub. The current city walls, reconstructed in 1538, continue to delineate the historic Old City, which for more than a century has been divided into distinct quarters.
