Memorial to Pope John XXII

Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, later Pope John XXIII, brought a distinctive approach to his leadership of the Catholic Church. He was elected pontiff in 1958, surprising many by initiating the Second Vatican Council, a significant reform that opened the Church to new dialogues. His papacy also saw engagement with other Christian denominations and nations, fostering international relations that extended to Eastern European countries.
Born into a family of sharecroppers in Lombardy, Roncalli served in various diplomatic roles before becoming Patriarch of Venice and later a cardinal. As Pope, his vision extended beyond tradition, emphasising equality and influencing both church practices and Italian politics by encouraging cooperation and prohibiting interference in local elections.
