Hasekura Rokuemon Tsunenaga

Hasekura Rokuemon Tsunenaga, a Japanese samurai descended from imperial lineage, is remembered for leading a significant diplomatic effort in the early 17th century. He commanded the Keichō Embassy, a mission that travelled to Europe between 1613 and 1620, seeking agreements with Pope Paul V and European monarchs. His journey included stops in New Spain and other ports, with a return route through New Spain in 1619 before travelling onward to Japan in 1620.

Though Hasekura and his party were welcomed in Spain and Rome, the embassy's objectives for trade were not met. This occurred during a period when Japan was beginning to restrict Christianity, and European nations declined the proposed trade deals. Hasekura returned to a Japan that was becoming more insular, with the nation's next major delegation to Europe not undertaking the journey for over two centuries.
