Sir Richard Grenville born in a house on this site 15th June 1542. Obtained Royal Charter for Bideford 1573. Led the first English Colony to settle in America 1585. Led Bideford's ships to fight the Spanish Armada 1588. Died a hero at the Battle of Flores 1591
