Rainhill Locomotive Trials

Site of Rainhill Locomotive Trials 1829 The straight level stretch of track that can be seen from the top of the footbridge was used to test whether steam-driven locomotives could complete the journey from Liverpool to Manchester pulling heavy loads. Stephenson's Rocket won the competition.
