The Buckle. It was here at The Buckle that Sir Nicholas Pelham repelled a party of 1500 French invaders in 1545 two days after they had sunk the Mary Rose at Southsea. In 1346 his ancestor accepted the sword and belt of the French King at the Battle of Poitiers. He adopted the buckle as the Pelham family coat of arms
