Sequoiadendron giganteum This specimen of the Big Tree or Wellingtonia was planted in the 1860's. It belongs to the Family Taxodiaceae the earliest representatives of which first appeared in the Jurassic Period and were contemporaries of the dinosaurs. Wellingtonias are now restricted to the high valleys of the Sierra Nevada in central California. They may reach 100 metres in height, 30 metres in circumference and up to 2,000 years in age.
