In memoriam on 26th february 1885, near this spot, a 6 inch shell being prepared for firing, detonated, killing: colonel wa fox-strangways - commandant and superintendent of experiments. colonel f lyons - superintendent, royal laboratory, woolwich. captain fm goold-adams - assistant superintendent of experiments. sergeant major s daykin gunner r allen gunner j underwood artificer rance this memorial was unveiled by colonel r a spackman, superintendent, proof and experimental establishment, shoeburyness on 26 february 1985. there is also a plaque commemorating the event in the garrison church.
