Felling Colliery Disaster. 25 May 1812. Near to this site, 92 men and boys were killed in a colliery explosion; they are remembered on a memorial in Heworth Churchyard. The Rev John Hodgson took up the cause of mine safety, and as a direct result of his efforts, the miners' safety lamp was developed.
