Brixham's Angel - For the women of Brixham In the Great Gale of 1866, the town lights were not visible from the sea due to the storm and heavy rain. The womenfolk feared for the lives of their fishermen. Many lives were lost and over 100 ships were wrecked. The women hauled their furniture and mattresses to the shore and set light to them to guide the boats into port. Some of the flames were reported to be in the shape of 'an angel'.
