Nave - The nave was used by the public until St. Nicholas’ Church was built nearby sometime before 1291. The nave continued to be used by the lay brothers for non-religious activities. The Abbey of St. Mary was founded for Augustinian canons in around 1124 and closed by Henry VIII in 1538. Although by 1600 most of the building had been dismantled some parts survive today both above and below ground. The name 'Abbey Fields' reminds us of the Abbey that once stood here.
