Robert Stevenson

Robert Stevenson (1772-1850) civil engineer (M.I.C.E. 1828). Designer of lighthouses, harbours, roads and bridges. Melville Monument - 1821. Stevenson finalised the dimensions and superintended the building of this 140 ft. high 1,500 ton, edifice utilising the world's first iron balance-crane invented under his direction by Francis Watt in 1809-1810 for erecting the Bell Rock lighthouse. The Institution of Civil Engineers 2003.
