Joseph Priestley, an English chemist and theologian, is remembered for his vital contributions to science and his advocacy for religious and political freedoms. His scientific achievements included the independent discovery of oxygen in 1774, through the breakdown of mercuric oxide. He also gained recognition for his work with electricity, his invention of carbonated water, and his identification of various gases, famously naming his discovery of oxygen "dephlogisticated air".

Priestley sought to harmonise scientific inquiry with his Christian faith, believing that understanding the natural world was key to human advancement and the eventual fulfilment of the Christian millennium. His commitment to the free exchange of ideas and his defence of equal rights for religious Dissenters were central to the founding of Unitarianism in England. However, his support for the American and French Revolutions and the controversial nature of his writings led to public opposition, forcing him to emigrate to the United States after his home and church were destroyed.
