George Heriot's School. Founded as a hospital school in 1628 in imitation of Christ's Hospital in London and in compliance with the will of George Heriot (1563 - 1624), a goldsmith and jeweller at the court of King James the sixth and first. From 1886 a day school for boys, and since 1979 for both boys and girls.
