Victims of the Birmingham Bombs November 1974

On a November evening in 1974, explosions devastated two Birmingham pubs. The attacks resulted in significant loss of life and numerous injuries. While the Provisional IRA did not officially claim responsibility at the time, a former officer later acknowledged the organisation's role. Decades later, one individual connected to the events suggested the aim was not to cause civilian harm, attributing deaths to a delayed warning.

Six men were arrested and convicted for the bombings, but they consistently proclaimed their innocence. They alleged that their confessions were obtained through duress. After serving many years, their convictions were overturned due to concerns about the safety and reliability of the original verdict. This case is widely recognised as a severe instance of injustice within the British legal system and marked a particularly tragic episode during the period known as the Troubles.
