Lluís Companys Jover

Lluís Companys served as the president of Catalonia during a turbulent period, including his time in office from 1934 and through the Spanish Civil War. A lawyer with connections to the labour movement, he was a significant figure in the Republican Left of Catalonia party and played a central part in the establishment of the Second Spanish Republic, furthering Catalan self-government and a progressive agenda.

His presidency saw him proclaim a Catalan State in October 1934, following which he and other officials were arrested. After a period of imprisonment, he was pardoned and returned to lead the Catalan government, remaining its president throughout the Civil War and supporting the Republican side.

Following the Republican defeat, Companys sought refuge in France, where he was later arrested and extradited to Francoist Spain, leading to his execution in October 1940.
