The New Zealand Wars, known in Māori as ngā pakanga o Aotearoa, represent a period of significant conflict spanning from 1845 to 1872. These wars saw divisions that were not strictly ethnic, with Māori individuals participating on opposing sides alongside settlers of European origin. Initially sparked by disagreements concerning land purchases, the conflicts intensified from 1860 when the government perceived a unified Māori resistance to land sales and the assertion of Crown sovereignty.

These struggles were complex, influenced by varied interests among different groups present in New Zealand before and after British sovereignty was established. Disputes over land and governance, alongside questions about imperial authority, created a nuanced political landscape. Some campaigns involved British troops and local militia against Māori forces, while later actions were directed at movements like Pai Mārire, which opposed the loss of Māori land and sought to bolster Māori identity.
