The loss of HMS Birkenhead off the coast of the Cape Colony remains a poignant event in naval history. This iron-hulled steam frigate, converted for troop transport, was carrying soldiers and civilians when she met her fate near Gansbaai in 1852.

In the moments before the sinking, with insufficient lifeboats for everyone, the soldiers famously maintained their ranks. This selfless act ensured that women and children could board the available boats, embodying an early, unofficial adherence to the 'women and children first' protocol. The bravery displayed during this tragedy gave rise to the phrase "Birkenhead drill", a term that would later be immortalised as a symbol of courage against overwhelming odds.
