Legacy Story

Henry Dunant's life was defined by a moment of profound empathy that changed the world. While on a business trip in 1859, he witnessed the horrific aftermath of the Battle of Solferino in Italy. He was appalled by the thousands of wounded soldiers left to die on the battlefield without any care. This experience became his life's calling. Moved to action, Dunant organized local villagers to tend to the wounded, regardless of their side in the conflict, famously inspiring them with the phrase "Tutti fratelli" (All are brothers). Upon returning to Geneva, he immortalized the experience in his book, "A Memory of Solferino," where he passionately advocated for the creation of permanent, neutral volunteer relief organizations to care for wounded soldiers. His advocacy was remarkably successful. In 1863, his ideas led directly to the establishment of the International Committee of the Red Cross. Just a year later, his work inspired the first Geneva Convention, a landmark treaty that established the foundational principles of international humanitarian law. This single act created a framework for compassion amidst the brutality of war. Despite this monumental achievement, Dunant later suffered financial ruin and lived in obscurity for decades. He was rediscovered by a journalist in his old age, living in a Swiss nursing home. This rediscovery sparked a wave of support and recognition for his forgotten work, culminating in him being awarded the very first Nobel Peace Prize in 1901. His legacy endures in the global Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, a testament to how one person's compassion can alleviate the suffering of millions.
