Legacy Story
Born in Sheffield in 1937, he grew up in a working-class family and began his career with Chesterfield before moving to Leicester City, where he established himself as a world-class goalkeeper.
He was a key figure in England's 1966 World Cup triumph, and his most iconic moment came in the 1970 World Cup against Brazil, where he made a seemingly impossible save from a Pelé header, considered one of the greatest saves ever made.
Despite losing the sight in one eye in a car crash in 1972, Banks made a remarkable comeback, playing for the Fort Lauderdale Strikers in the NASL and being named NASL Goalkeeper of the Year.
Giving back:
This is where his story becomes genuinely moving. He was a passionate ambassador for the Alzheimer's Society for many years, drawing on his personal experience, having lost his brother David to dementia in 2012, and seeing three fellow 1966 World Cup heroes affected by the disease.
He spearheaded the Alzheimer's Society's "United Against Dementia" campaign with Sir Geoff Hurst, calling on the public to donate, fund research and improve care.
At the age of 80 he laced up his trainers and walked in the Memory Walk event in Stoke. With his support, the charity recruited 110,000 walkers at 40 events nationwide, raising over £7.3 million.
In 2008 he organised a charity match at the Britannia Stadium between a Banks XI and a Pelé XI to raise money for sick children in North Staffordshire, featuring a speech from Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
His family requested that donations in his memory go to Alzheimer's Society and The Gordon Banks In Safe Hands Children's Hospital Fund.
The character:
Banks was remembered not just as a great goalkeeper but as a true gentleman of the game. His humility, sportsmanship and kindness endeared him to fans, teammates and opponents alike.
Pelé wrote after his death: "So I am glad he saved my header — because that act was the start of a friendship between us that I will always treasure."
