Legacy Story

From humble beginnings in Dunfermline, Scotland, Andrew Carnegie's life was a quintessential rags-to-riches story. Immigrating to the United States in 1848, he worked his way up from a telegraph messenger boy to build a titan of industry. His Carnegie Steel Company revolutionized steel production, creating the material that would shape modern America, from its railroads to its skyscrapers. Carnegie's immense ambition was matched only by his groundbreaking philosophy on wealth. In his 1889 essay, "The Gospel of Wealth," he stated that the rich have a moral obligation to use their fortunes to advance society. He believed wealthy individuals were merely trustees of their capital, which should be administered for the common good. This was not just a theory; it became the blueprint for the second half of his life. After selling his company in 1901, he dedicated his remaining years to philanthropy on an unprecedented scale. He established institutions for education, science, and world peace, but his most revolutionary legacy is the network of public libraries he funded. Believing in free access to knowledge for all, he financed over 2,500 libraries across the English-speaking world, creating lasting temples of learning for generations to come.
